Eurasia – planned accession to the International Design System

On 14-15 October 2025, the Administrative Council of the Eurasian Patent Office decided to accede to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement on behalf of all eight member states of the EAPO. Thus, during 2026, it will be possible to file a Eurasian design through the International Design registration system.

In addition, the EAPO will become a party to the Patent Law Treaty of 1 June 2000.

The provisions of the Patent Instructions to the Eurasian Patent Convention concerning the examination of industrial designs have been clarified. These changes will avoid uncertainty in the application of the novelty grace period and in the sequential filing of multiple divisional applications. From 1 February 2026, it will be possible to extend the validity period for a design in respect of individual designs specified in the application, and third parties will be able to file administrative oppositions against the validity of Eurasian design not within three years after the publication of the decision to grant the design, as is currently the case, but without any time restrictions.
